How is Distance Learning Transforming Higher Education?

Distance Learning Transformation

Distance education or distance learning is designed for the education of students who may not always be physically present at a school. Also, it is a viable option for many individuals of all ages who desire to get an education. As distance learning is continuously gaining popularity, the range of distance learning programmes can be overwhelming. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), offering large-scale interactive participation and open access through the World Wide Web or other network technologies, are recent developments in distance education.
Like any other thing, it too has advantages and disadvantages. But it has served as a means of higher learning for many individuals. Present day, distance education plays a significant role in the growth of higher education.

How is Distance Learning Transforming Higher Education?

Advantages
1. Study from anywhere, anytime
The best thing about distance education is that you can learn from anywhere and at any time. It doesn’t matter where you live, you can join the course and start learning.
2. Flexibility
Distance education gives complete freedom to choose your own time for the course. All you need is a computer with an internet connection.
3. No commuting
Commuting involves a lot of time, money and energy. If you opt for distance education, entire college will be in your room.
4. Learn while working
As said earlier distance education offers flexibility of time, you can pursue your college while you are working. Moreover it is one of the best options for housewives who can learn sitting in their home.
Disadvantages
1. No interaction with faculty
In distance education you will seriously miss the human aspect because you are only engaging with the technology and machines. You cannot talk to your friends and cannot enjoy a normal college life.
2. Not valued by all employers
No matter how good the university/college form where you pursued your distance learning programme, some companies only prefer candidates with regular degrees.
3. Not all courses are available
Another major disadvantage of distance learning is that it doesn’t offer all the courses. Courses like Medicine and Engineering can’t be taught online because it needs practical classes and experiments.

4. Costly and complex technology
All the lectures and conferences in distance education are given through webinars. For this you need to have a high speed internet connection. Many people cannot afford it because of their financial condition and hence cannot join in distance Education College.
Distance learning is a good supplement but it’s not a substitute for face to face learning. Nevertheless it helps a lot of people to pursue higher education.
