Calculate Heat Loss and Temperature Drop in a Glass Window Pane

Question

The cross section of a storm window is shown in the sketch. The window is measured as 1.8 m by 3.6 m. On a cold day in North Dakota, the inside and outside air temperatures are 25°C and -30°C, respectively. Convective heat transfer coefficients on the inside and outside surfaces of the window are 25 and 18 W/m2 K, respectively. Window glass has k 0[0.8 W/m.K. The air gap between glass panes may be treated as a purely conductive layer with k=0.026 W/m.K. Thermal radiation is to be neglected.

 


(a) How much heat will be lost through the window?
(b) What temperature drop will exist across each of the glass panes?
